5 Signs Your Pet May Be Dehydrated

Dehydration can happen quickly, especially during warm weather or after periods of illness.

While mild dehydration is often easy to correct, severe dehydration requires immediate veterinary care.

One of the first signs is decreased energy. Pets that normally enjoy walks or playtime may seem unusually tired or reluctant to move. Dry or sticky gums are another common indicator that your pet isn’t getting enough fluids.

You may also notice sunken eyes, excessive panting, or reduced skin elasticity. A simple skin tent test can sometimes help identify dehydration, but it should never replace a veterinary examination.

To help prevent dehydration:

  • Keep fresh water available at all times.
  • Bring water during walks and outdoor activities.
  • Monitor pets closely during hot weather.
  • Contact your veterinarian if vomiting or diarrhea persists.

Early intervention can prevent dehydration from becoming a more serious medical emergency.
